New Newspaper Projects for Libraries

New York: NewspaperDirect, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company that offers print-on-demand newspapers for travelers, is now targeting the library and education markets, through a partnership with ProQuest Information and Learning of Ann Arbor, Mich.
NewspaperDirect offers 240 same-day newspaper titles through its print-on-demand network and its new electronic format.
Libraries will now be able to select the newspapers and number of copies they want and print them on 11×17 inch paper in black and white. The company said its print-on-demand versions typically costs 30%-50% less than the publishers' annual print subscription rates—saving money for libraries facing budget cuts.
Another Canadian company, Cold North Wind of Ottawa, Ontario, has also rolled out a public library program, this one for newspaper archives. The company says its Digitization Co-op will allow libraries to digitize large historical document sets without any upfront investment. The Markham Libraries north of Toronto have been a beta site for the project, working with the York Region Newspaper Group, a division of Torstar.
