Vancouver Public Library is the First Library in BC to Offer Access to PressDisplay™

Vancouver, BC, Canada—The Newspapers & Magazines Division of the Vancouver Public Library (VPL) announced today that it can now provide patrons with greater access to same-day international newspapers. Through an agreement with BC-based NewspaperDirect, VPL has become the first library in BC to install PressDisplay™, the market's leading online newspaper reading service.

PressDisplay™ is an online newspaper portal that offers over 200 newspapers from 53 countries around the world, in 33 languages. All newspapers on the service are published online in their original format and layout, including illustrations. The service provides sophisticated digital tools such as a "drag & read" full screen mode, magnifying lens, bookmarks, search function, and a two-week archive. Newspapers are available almost immediately after they are printed in their local market, and in some cases, due to time zone differences, readers in Vancouver can view the next day's news from some areas of the world.

PressDisplay™ is accessible to Vancouver Public Library cardholders in the library, and by logging on to the Electronic Resources feature on the library's website (www.vpl.ca) from home.

"Demand for on-line resources is increasing," comments Paul Whitney, Director, Vancouver Public Library. "PressDisplay is a great addition to our robust suite of online products and was the unanimous choice of the Information Systems Advisory Committee for its ease of use and great features. We are convinced that PressDisplay will best serve our staff and public and keep Vancouver Public Library abreast of leading-edge services."

In 2002, VPL was the first library in the world to install NewspaperDirect's print-on-demand service, which enables the Library to print same-day out-of-market newspapers onsite in an 11×17" format.
